PROCESS FOR STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICKUP AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL--We are putting in place some guidelines that we believe will make student drop off and pick up from cars easier for parents and safer for all concerned. Please follow these rules out of respect for everyone involved--kids and parents. Using the map below as your guide for traffic pattern: 1) Please ensure that your child is prepared to quickly exit your vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk--backpack in hand, seat belt undone, everything needed in their hands. The time to give last minute instructions is prior to entering the drop zone. 2) Pull your vehicle ahead as far as possible toward the west end of the parking lot before you stop and your child exits your vehicle. Do not stop in the east end of the loop or make multiple stops in the loop. When you have pulled ahead as far as possible, all students exit the vehicle quickly at the same time. 3) The drop off and pickup pattern is now marked by yellow arrows. Drive only in the areas indicated by the arrows painted on the parking lot and illustrated in the picture below. Do not cut across parking spaces. 4) As much as possible, keep the line moving so everyone can get thru as safely and quickly as possible. 5) If a child needs more time to remove projects, etc. then follow the arrows to park in a marked parking space to allow time to remove those items. Use caution when in the parking spaces and when leaving them--no one needs to leave the lot so quickly that it is worth it to damage a vehicle or injure a child in the process. 6) Instruct your child to always be aware of cars in their vicinity to ensure that they can move toward the building safely. 7) If your child walks or rides their bike to school, have them follow the sidewalk down Maple Street to where it ends, then skirt the parking lot by going west on the grass to the west end of the parking lot and then go north across the grass outside of the parking lot area to reach the sidewalk. At the end of the day, have them wait a few minutes for traffic to clear and then skirt the parking lot on the grass to reach the sidewalk. 8) If the process of student drop off and pick up is causing too big of a delay in your morning routine, consider leaving earlier (or later) to avoid the rush between 7:30-7:40 when most students tend to arrive. With your cooperation and consideration, the beginning and end of day traffic pattern can become safer, quicker and smoother for all concerned.

Miss Tina and Miss Fiona from the Dow Healthcare Materials site came to our SpyCamp this morning. They worked with our students on lab safety and helped them use science processes to create lotion, demonstrate wicking of liquids, experiment with liquid densities, and blow up balloons using yeast and sugar to create CO2. Great experiences in science for everyone. Thanks to Angie Trinklein for helping to arrange this experience.

Spy Camp, our summer program for our most inquisitive students, is in session this week and next. Students this morning worked together to solve an Encyclopedia Brown mystery and identify story elements. Mystery for the day-If you stole some stamps, what would be the best way to make sure no one could find them on you or your property but yet have them back in possession quickly? Ideas??

Hemlock Middle School is looking for Parent Advisers for Career Exploration We are looking for parents and other volunteers who would like to share their career information with our Hemlock Middle School students. We are targeting 7th and 8th graders with this program, although if the presenter chooses, we can extend this to another grade--6 or 8. Our program goal is to help our students develop career Individual Development Plans that they can use to think about career options that might interest them, assess their strengths and interests, guide their high school course selections, make post-secondary career and education plans and expand their horizons for work and education. Presentations should be short (20 minutes or so), as interactive as possible, include visual aids (objects, video, audio, pictures, typical work dress, etc.), and designed to show students the positives in pursuing the presented career choice/career pathway. We are hoping to help our students examine: What are my goals? What am I good at? What type of work do I enjoy? What kind of work–life balance do I want for my future? What does a successful career entail? Do I need additional training to pursue this career? Do I have interests and/or skills that I could use in this career? We are aiming to get as many different careers as possible presented to our students. No career is too small or too big. We hope to cover all the various Career Pathways found at https://www.michigan.gov/documents/pathways_8310_7.html Please join us in this effort by completing our survey below. https://goo.gl/forms/lf6PefnQtHTe4WgX2

7 Tips to Mentally Prepare Your Child for the School Year Kids will be heading back to school before we know it! Whether your child is excited about the new year or dreading it, this period of time is always an adjustment. So how can parents help kids get mentally prepared for the new school year? Here are a few tips to help: 1. TALK EARLY AND OFTEN It's never too early to start talking with and listening to your children about the first day of school. Ask them what they think school will be like and see if they have any specific concerns so that you'll have time to address it over the next couple of weeks. It's totally normal to have first day jitters. 2. GO TO THE ORIENTATION If your child's school is hosting an orientation, take advantage of it. Often children are worried that they won't know how to get to the bathroom, where to eat lunch, or how to get to a locker. If your school doesn't offer one or you are unable to make it, ask the teacher if it would be possible to stop by for a visit. Teachers are usually in their classrooms prepping for the new school year in advance. 3. MEET THE TEACHER For kids, wondering if they'll like their teacher is a big source of fear. If your child isn't comfortable in the teacher's classroom, he or she will be less likely to be ready to learn. Many teachers will make themselves available for a phone call or will return an email if a visit isn't possible. 4. FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN, READ BOOKS OR WATCH EDUCATIONAL CARTOONS These materials can help children read about and see what a typical day will consist of and what they will learn in school. Some good examples are Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Slate, The Night Before First Grade by Wing, and Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School by Parish. 5. SET UP SCHOOL ZONES AND EXPECTATIONS Establish a location for backpacks and distraction-free homework zones at home. Setup homework and study times to help manage expectations and establish good routines. 6. TAKE YOUR KIDS SHOPPING WITH YOU Your kids will be more excited to use their back-to-school supplies if they picked them out. Doing so will help them feel prepared and will also provide an opportunity to talk about how the new supplies might be used in the coming year. 7. PRACTICE YOUR NEW ROUTINE Both children and adults can benefit from practicing your new routine. Stage a morning dry run to see how long it takes you and your children to get out of the door in the morning. It will not only help you predict how early you and your kids need to get up, but your children will benefit from learning what to expect each week day. It's important for parents to remember that first day jitters are completely normal and can be relieved with some mental preparation leading up to the big day. Like with many things, their worries are likely related to the fear of the unknown. Talking about where things are and what will be different will go a long way to help reduce your child's concerns.
