This just in: School is more than just academics! What the Research Tells Us:
Those who stay in school receive something more than a diploma. It is more than discussing academic subjects like reading, writing and arithmetic.
Students who stay in school and finish their high school education possess something non-grads don't have. Something happens in the twelve years of a K-12 school experience that doesn't occur in someone without a diploma.
As economist James Heckman (from the University of Chicago) reviewed the results of longitudinal studies, he drew a few conclusions. Those are summarized here:
Academic success does not necessarily predict future success in life.
Students gain and mature greatly when they remain in a disciplined routine.
Improvement and maturity occur in relationship with a cohort of people.
Social and emotional learning are a large part of the education process.
In other words, there are hidden advantages to staying in school.

Summer begins today
Just because you want to enjoy the summer months doesn’t mean your child has to stop learning during the summer. Students interested in growth and maintaining their learning through the year, as well as those looking for other options, are the perfect candidates for opportunities through our school district, our local library, through apps such as Freckle, or video games with educational programs like Minecraft for Education.
Summer break can still be fun, but it doesn't have to be a vacation from learning.
