Heart Safe

Hemlock, MI — November 2025 — Hemlock High School is proud to announce that it has officially become Heart Safe Certified, joining hundreds of schools across Michigan dedicated to protecting student health and safety through cardiac emergency preparedness.

The recognition was presented during the 2025 My Heart Saves the World Award Ceremony, an event that celebrates schools earning the MyHeartSafe designation—a program designed to prevent sudden cardiac death among youth by ensuring schools are ready to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.

The ceremony, hosted by Dominique Smith from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), highlighted the growing statewide commitment to heart safety in schools. Dr. Annette Gilmer detailed the requirements for certification, which include maintaining an up-to-date cardiac emergency response plan, ensuring staff are trained in CPR and AED use, and verifying that life-saving equipment is accessible and operational.

This year marked a record achievement, with 399 schools across Michigan receiving the Heart Safe designation—202 of them for the first time. The initiative is supported through partnerships with the Michigan Department of Education, local health organizations, and school communities that share a common goal of safeguarding students’ lives.

During the event, speakers emphasized the critical link between health and education. One parent shared a moving story about the importance of preparedness, while Jen Shea introduced the Beaumont Student Heart Check Program, which screens students for potential cardiac risks. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to school representatives and a renewed call for continued collaboration in promoting cardiac awareness and readiness.

Hemlock High School’s certification reflects the district’s ongoing dedication to student safety and well-being. By achieving Heart Safe status, the school demonstrates its commitment to being ready when seconds matter most.

Principal Keith Green expressed his pride in the recognition, stating, “This certification represents our staff’s commitment to the safety and care of every student. Being prepared for emergencies is part of our mission to create a safe and supportive environment for learning.”
