Hemlock Public School District is proud to announce the hiring of Brad Phillion as the inaugural Head Coach of the newly established Girls Golf program. This marks a significant milestone as the district expands its athletic offerings with the launch of its first-ever girls golf team, set to tee off in Fall 2025.
The season will begin with a Tri-Valley Conference Jamboree—one of three scheduled events—that brings together all Blue and Red Division schools that sponsor girls golf. Additional tournaments and matches will be added to the calendar, with the season allowing for a maximum of sixteen competition dates.
Coach Brad Phillion brings extensive experience and deep ties to Hemlock Athletics. He has served as the Boys Varsity Golf Coach since 2010 and was a Boys Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach from 2008 to 2023. Under his leadership, both individual golfers and teams have advanced to the MHSAA State Finals, with multiple players continuing on to pursue golf at the collegiate level.
In addition to his coaching experience, Coach Phillion is an accomplished golfer himself. He is a multiple-time Saginaw Country Club champion, a former Michigan PGA champion of the WholesaleGrips.com Open, and has competed in numerous Michigan Opens and Michigan Amateurs.
“We’re excited to announce the addition of girls’ golf to our athletic offerings at Hemlock High School and to welcome Coach Brad Phillion as the program’s inaugural head coach,” said Director of Athletic, Angela Pohl. “Coach Phillion has done an outstanding job leading our boys’ team, and his passion for the sport, commitment to student-athletes, and vision for growth make him the ideal choice to launch our girls’ program. With growing interest from our students and strong community support, this is a great opportunity to build something special that will serve our athletes for years to come.”
Coach Phillion shared his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “It’s an honor to be the first girls golf coach in Hemlock school history. My goal is to hit the ground running. We already have the facilities and equipment in place and are ready to go. A special thank you to Mike Mueller from Valley View for allowing us to use his course—he’s a tremendous supporter of youth golf and a truly special person. I’d also like to extend my gratitude to Director of Athletics Angela Pohl and Superintendent Killingbeck for their support in making this program a reality. Girls golf is growing rapidly across the country, and to be launching this program during a time of exciting growth on our campus, with such strong community support, makes this a truly incredible time to be a Huskie.”
The girls golf season officially begins on August 11, the first permissible date for practice as set by the MHSAA. The team will practice and compete at Mueller Valley View Farm Golf Course in Saginaw, MI, the same location used by the boys team. Backed by strong support from Hemlock Public School District and the surrounding community, the program aims to provide new opportunities for student-athletes while reflecting the school’s broader mission to grow and diversify its athletic programs.
As Hemlock High School enters this exciting new chapter, community members, families, and future athletes are encouraged to show their support. Students or families interested in joining the program can reach out via email at Golf_B@hemlockps.com. More information will be shared in the near future.
