For the second consecutive year, the Hemlock High School Girls Tennis team has captured both the regional championship and Tri-Valley Conference title. Finishing the season with a 14-2 record, the team stood out as one of the top programs in the state all season long, led by their dominant singles players. Their continued success is a reflection of hard work, preparation, and the strong team culture built under the leadership of Head Coach Dean Rusch.
To prepare for high-pressure regional competition, the team’s schedule often included multiple opponents in a single evening. This approach helped build both physical and mental toughness. Coach Rusch, an avid tennis player himself, said his own time on the court is used to identify techniques and strategies his team can benefit from. “The minute we wrapped up last season, I knew this group had what it takes to do it again,” said Rusch. “We graduated a handful of impactful competitors in 2024, but I had a vision for what the returning players and their new teammates could achieve, and they did just that.”
Throughout the season, Coach Rusch kept things fresh with new challenges to keep the team motivated and focused. When reflecting on the team’s journey, he said, “Every win made me proud. Every battle that the girls took part in, they worked hard, and then the joy on their faces after was awesome.” Looking ahead to next season, Rusch said what he’s most excited for is continuing to coach young women who are not only talented athletes but also exceptional people. “Other teams’ coaches always tell me how sweet our girls are. They’re amazing citizens of Hemlock, and I love the friendships they form and the family atmosphere we’ve built. I’m just lucky to be a part of it.” Hemlock’s investment in new tennis courts has also played a major role in the program’s growth and success. Rusch encourages students who are looking to try a new sport to give tennis a chance, saying, “Give yourself the opportunity to come learn the game. Play it once and you will love it. It’s a sport you can play for the rest of your life.”
Athletic Director Angela Pohl added, "This team embodies what it means to be a Hemlock Huskie. Their commitment, their heart, and the way they represent our community is something truly special. We couldn't be prouder of their achievements and the leadership Coach Rusch brings to the program."
The Hemlock Girls Tennis Team has not only earned back-to-back regional and TVC titles, but also the respect of their school and community. With a strong foundation and a bright future ahead, they continue to set the standard for excellence in athletics and sportsmanship. Their success reflects not only the talent and dedication of the athletes but also the guidance of Coach Rusch, who has earned multiple Regional Coach of the Year honors throughout his career for the culture and consistency he brings to the program.
