District Focused on Transformation

Hemlock, MI - With the May 3rd bond initiative approved by voters, the Hemlock Public School District is focused on the transformation ahead, rolling up our shelves and working hand in hand with our project partners.

The district selected a May election to provide the best timeline for the design, review, bid, and build process. Team members have visited other school districts and reviewed spaces and are working with our construction management firm Wolgast Corporation and our architect firm, Tower Pinkster to ensure that the finished improvements best meet the needs of our students, staff, and community.

Board President Matt Wesener said, “We are so thankful for the continued support of the Hemlock community.  This is a transformational undertaking for the Hemlock Schools. We are so excited to see this next phase of Hemlock Public School District start to take shape over the coming years!”

Upon return to school next fall, students and staff will see some improvements in each school building but primarily at Hemlock Elementary and K.C. Ling with some major projects on the docket for summer 2023. The school district will continue to work to keep our stakeholders informed as this process unfolds.

On the horizon, is the August 2022 renewal of our non-homestead 18 operational mills that is voted on every four years. These 18 mills are required for schools to pass as part of the structure of our operational budgets and affect second homes and businesses. The State of Michigan deducts these funds from our per-pupil funding, assuming that every school in the State has these approved by their community.

Also in  August 2022 is the Saginaw ISD Special Education Millage. This millage is countywide, but if approved, would positively impact Hemlock Public School District students and free up dollars that would be redirected to student programming and services.

As of right now, other than voting every four years on non-homestead 18 operational millage, and in 2030 when there is an opportunity for the school district to seek a renewal of the current one-mill sinking fund, there is nothing else in the current forecast.
