At a time when school districts across Michigan are facing rising costs, enrollment challenges, and financial uncertainty, Hemlock Public School District has a positive story to share.
Enrollment is growing. Finances remain strong. Opportunities for students continue to expand.
The district's 2025–2026 annual financial audit, conducted by independent accounting firm Weinlander Fitzhugh, resulted in an unmodified opinion, confirming that the district's financial statements were presented fairly, in all material respects, in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
Beyond the audit opinion, the district's financial position and positive enrollment trends reflect years of responsible stewardship, strategic planning, and a shared commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities.
These results are particularly meaningful because they demonstrate that a school district can maintain financial stability while continuing to invest in its people, programs, and facilities.
Growing Enrollment. Strong Financial Performance.
Hemlock concluded the 2025–2026 fiscal year with slightly more revenue than expenses, maintaining a strong financial position while continuing to invest in classrooms, personnel, facilities, and student opportunities.
The district's enrollment growth tells another important part of the story.
After years of working to strengthen its programs, facilities, and educational offerings, Hemlock welcomed more than 1,333 students in fall 2026, continuing a positive enrollment trend.
For a district serving a small-town community, that growth represents more than a number. It reflects the confidence families are placing in Hemlock and the opportunities available to their children.
Board of Education President Matt Wesener emphasized that financial strength is about much more than numbers on a balance sheet.
"Our enrollment trend and strong financial position are what allow us to protect our students and staff while continuing to provide the outstanding learning experiences and opportunities that make Hemlock special," said Wesener. "It allows us to invest in our classrooms, support our employees, maintain safe and welcoming schools, and provide experiences that might otherwise be out of reach for a district our size. These results are the product of years of teamwork between our Board, administration, teachers, and support staff. Everyone has played a role in getting us here."
Responsible Stewardship Creates Opportunities
Hemlock's financial progress has not come at the expense of educational opportunities. In fact, the district has continued to expand what is possible for students.
The Lockwood STEM Center provides students with access to robotics, fabrication, electronics, computer science, and other hands-on learning experiences. Expanded academic offerings, early childhood programming, athletics, fine arts, and the district's Performing Arts Center further demonstrate Hemlock's commitment to providing opportunities that extend well beyond the traditional classroom.
These investments reflect a long-term approach to district improvement, one that connects responsible financial management with meaningful educational outcomes.
Board Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair Jamie Rivette, CPA, emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong financial foundation while investing in students.
"Strong financial results do not happen by accident. They come from consistent oversight, disciplined budgeting, thoughtful planning, and people throughout the organization taking ownership of their responsibilities," said Rivette. "What makes Hemlock's position especially encouraging is that we have continued to grow enrollment and expand opportunities while maintaining financial stability. That is a credit to the entire district team and the community that supports our schools."
Rivette and fellow Finance Committee member David Messing reviewed the annual audit with district administration and representatives from Weinlander Fitzhugh. Following that review, the Finance Committee recommended that the Board of Education accept the audit.
A Team Effort Years in the Making
Hemlock's financial position and enrollment growth are not the result of any single decision, program, or individual.
They reflect years of collaboration and a shared commitment to moving the district forward.
The Board of Education establishes direction and provides financial oversight. Administrators work to align resources with district priorities. Teachers and support staff create the learning environments and experiences that families value. Community partners contribute resources, expertise, and opportunities that help the district accomplish more.
Together, these efforts have helped position Hemlock to navigate financial challenges while continuing to plan for the future.
A strong financial foundation provides greater flexibility to respond to unexpected expenses, changing economic conditions, and fluctuations in state funding. It also allows the district to make thoughtful, long-term decisions rather than simply reacting to immediate challenges.
Wesener believes that collaboration remains one of Hemlock's greatest strengths.
"Our success belongs to the people who show up every day and make Hemlock a great place for students," Wesener added. "We have worked hard to build a district where responsible financial decisions and exceptional educational opportunities go hand in hand. We are proud of how far we have come, but even more excited about what lies ahead."
Small Town. Big Opportunities. A Strong Future.
The latest financial audit adds another chapter to Hemlock's story of progress.
Growing enrollment, responsible financial management, expanded educational opportunities, and continued investment in students and staff have helped establish a strong foundation for the district's future.
While challenges remain for public education, Hemlock continues to demonstrate what is possible when a school community works together with a clear vision and a shared commitment to students.
At Hemlock, financial strength is not the destination. It is the foundation that makes greater opportunities possible.
And that foundation has been built together.
Innovate. Collaborate. Educate.
