Hemlock Public School District has selected longtime educator, coach, and school leader Noreen Zastrow to serve as its next Athletic Director.
Zastrow brings more than 25 years of experience in education and a lifelong connection to the Hemlock community. During her seven years with the district, she has served as Dean of Students, Middle School Athletic Director, counselor, event supervisor, and a steady advocate for students. Her background also includes coaching at the high school, middle school, and youth levels, along with service as vice president of the Hemlock Sports Boosters.
“Noreen knows our students, understands our community, and believes deeply in what Hemlock athletics can and should represent,” said Board of Education President Matt Wesener. “She has the experience, relationships, and determination needed to support our coaches and help our student-athletes succeed in competition, in the classroom, and in life.”
Zastrow was selected following a comprehensive process that included a review of applicants and multiple rounds of interviews with district leaders, coaches, parents, and community representatives.
“One of the things that stood out was Noreen’s understanding that athletics is an extension of the classroom,” said a member of the selection committee. “She sees wins and championships as important, but she also understands that the greater responsibility is developing disciplined, resilient, and accountable young people. Her vision was ambitious, practical, and centered on students.”
As Athletic Director, Zastrow will oversee the district’s middle and high school athletic programs while working to strengthen communication, support coach development, increase student participation, expand youth programming, and build stronger connections among athletes, families, schools, and the greater Hemlock community.
Her vision for the department is grounded in visibility, accessibility, open communication, and high expectations. She also plans to maximize the district’s upgraded athletic facilities while creating a consistent, first-class experience for student-athletes, families, and guests.
“Noreen brings something especially valuable to this position. She knows where we have been, understands where we are, and has a clear vision for where we can go next,” said Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck. “She is competitive, student-centered, and deeply invested in Hemlock. She understands that championship programs are built through daily work, strong relationships, and a shared commitment to something bigger than any one person. She is ready to lead, and she is ready to pull the sled.”
Zastrow holds a master’s degree in counseling from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lake Superior State University. She is a member of both the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

I look forward to supporting our coaches, building meaningful relationships, and keeping students at the center of every decision.”
For Zastrow, the goal is clear: honor Hemlock’s traditions, elevate the experience for every student-athlete, and build an athletic culture capable of creating both championships and lasting character.
