At Hemlock Public School District, this year’s story is not about numbers. It is about kids showing up. It is about relationships being built, routines taking hold, and classrooms feeling whole again.
During the third marking period, the district saw a 51.35% improvement in chronic absenteeism compared to last year. That matters. But what matters more is what that number represents.
More students in seats. More conversations. More learning. More connection.
Behind that shift is a simple belief. When people come together and stay focused on kids, things get better.
This Was Built on Purpose
This did not happen by accident.
Over the past year, Hemlock built a clear, intentional approach to attendance. Teams in every building tracked data, met regularly, and responded early. Staff worked from a shared system that focused on prevention, consistency, and support. Families were engaged. Students were encouraged. The message was clear and steady across the district.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
“Thanks for being here.”
“Your presence matters.”
Those were not just words. They became the culture.
The district also shifted how it talks about absence. It is no longer about missing work. It is about missing experiences. Missing discussions. Missing moments that cannot be recreated.
And just as importantly, it is about what the classroom loses when a student is not there.
This work was grounded in a districtwide plan that emphasized early identification, consistent systems, and strong communication across all schools .
People Made This Happen
Systems matter. But people make the difference.
This progress belongs to teachers who noticed when something felt off. Secretaries who made the call. Principals who stayed on it. Bus drivers who greeted kids by name. Support staff who stepped in. Families who partnered. Students who kept coming back.
Attendance was not owned by one person or one department. It became everyone’s work.
“This is about people doing the right things for kids every day,” said Lindy Beckman, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “When you build the right systems and pair them with strong relationships, you start to see real change. We are proud of our staff and the way they showed up for students.”
Focus Creates Momentum
Hemlock made attendance visible. It was talked about. Measured. Celebrated. Addressed early.
That kind of focus builds momentum. And momentum builds belief.
“Our Board is proud of this work because it reflects who we are,” said Matt Wesener. “This is what happens when a district stays focused on kids and people. You see growth. You feel it in the buildings. And you know it is making a difference.”
The Work Continues
There is pride in this moment. But there is also clarity. This is not finished work.
Hemlock Public School District remains committed to continuing this progress, strengthening connections, and making sure every student feels seen, supported, and expected every day.
Because when kids show up, everything changes.
