Today feels different in Hemlock. The turf is down inside the Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse, and with it comes the transition from construction to purpose. When you walk through the doors now, it no longer feels like a project in progress. It feels like a place where real work is about to happen.

Stand at one end of the field, and you can see it already unfolding. Golfers dialing in approach shots in March. Soccer players are grinding through footwork long before the season begins. Football athletes sharpening their technique months ahead of the first snap. Softball and baseball players are taking swings while snow still rests on outdoor fields. Pompon refining routines. Band rehearsing cadence without being pushed into hallways. This facility was not built to impress. It was built to prepare.

The Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse represents a simple but powerful mindset: No Excuses. That mindset honors the man whose name stands on the building. Patrick Wolgast was known for being hard charging, full of grit, and committed to getting things done. He showed up early. He worked harder than the next person. He finished what he started. That spirit is embedded in steel, turf, and concrete. This is a space that says weather is not an obstacle. Seasons are not limitations. Preparation is not optional.

The project was made possible through the generous donations of the Patrick Wolgast Family and friends, combined with a $1 million federal grant that helped accelerate construction and expand the district’s ability to deliver year-round opportunities for students. Additional in-kind contributions from Pumford Construction also supported the project’s completion. Together, these partnerships reflect a powerful alignment between private generosity, public investment, and community commitment.

Board of Education President Matt Wesener emphasized the broader significance of the facility. “This Fieldhouse is about discipline and opportunity,” Wesener said. “It reflects a community that believes preparation should never be seasonal. The Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse ensures our students have year-round access to development opportunities. It is a statement that Hemlock intends to compete, grow, and lead.”

Students already feel the shift. One current student-athlete described the impact simply: “Winter used to feel like waiting. Next year it will now feel like we are getting better every day. It feels like there are no excuses anymore.” That sentiment captures exactly what this building represents. It creates access. It removes barriers. It reinforces expectation.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck Jr., Ed.D., noted that the facility’s meaning extends well beyond athletics. “This is about opportunity and mindset,” Killingbeck said. “No excuses. That fits Patrick. That fits Hemlock. Winter is not an excuse. Limited space is not an excuse. Preparation matters. This building will not make students successful. What they choose to do inside it will.”

BAND

Hemlock Public School District will host a Soft Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Monday, March 16 at 6:00 PM. The evening will showcase students actively using the facility, allowing the community to experience the space alive and in motion. Golf, soccer, football, softball, baseball, pompon, and band will all demonstrate how the Fieldhouse immediately expands opportunity. Exterior sidewalks, fencing, and landscaping will be completed later this spring as weather allows, with batting cages and additional enhancements installed in the coming months. The foundation is complete, and the function is real.

Soccer

A larger grand opening celebration will take place this fall during a varsity home football game, providing a formal community moment that reflects the full weight of what this facility represents. Generations of Hemlock students will walk through those doors. They will train. They will sweat. They will improve. They will learn that preparation is not seasonal and that success favors those who refuse to make excuses.

In a district known for its commitment to Small Town. Big Opportunities, the Patrick Wolgast Fieldhouse stands as a declaration of belief. Hemlock prepares. Hemlock builds. Hemlock leads. And now, Hemlock trains year-round.
