Hemlock Public School District is excited to officially announce the launch of its new High School Esports Team, expanding opportunities for students to compete, collaborate, and represent the Huskie Pack in the rapidly growing world of competitive gaming.

The team will be led by Head Coach Nick Prezzato and will compete in nine different esports titles through PlayVS, a national platform that connects student gamers across the country in structured, school-based competition.

Esports at Hemlock is about more than just playing games. It is about preparing students for the future.

Participation in esports helps students develop:

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving

  • Leadership and resilience

  • Time management and accountability

  • Exploration of college and career pathways in STEM and technology fields

“Esports gives students a place to belong while building skills that translate directly into the classroom and beyond,” said Head Coach Nick Prezzato. “Our goal is to create an environment where students grow as competitors, teammates, and leaders.”

National education organizations recognize the value of structured competitive gaming. As noted by the National Federation of State High School Associations, “Esports provides students with opportunities to build teamwork, communication, and leadership skills in an inclusive environment that connects them more deeply to their school community.”

Board President Matt Wesener emphasized the district’s commitment to innovation and student engagement.

“This program reflects our belief that schools must evolve alongside the interests and talents of our students,” said Matt Wesener. “Esports provides another meaningful avenue for students to connect, compete, and develop skills that will serve them long after graduation. We are proud to support innovative programming that prepares students to be life-ready.”

Denise Dowdell, Director of Business Operations and Human Resources, highlighted the long-term vision behind the initiative.

“At Hemlock, we are intentional about investing in programs that align with workforce trends and future-ready skills,” Dowdell said. “Esports bridges technology, collaboration, and career exploration in a way that resonates with today’s students. This is an investment in both engagement and opportunity.”

The launch of the Esports Team reflects Hemlock Public School District’s ongoing commitment to expanding student opportunities, fostering inclusive spaces, and building programs that connect passion with purpose.
