For Kaleigh Berent, service on the Hemlock Public School District Board of Education is rooted in a lifetime of community engagement, professional commitment, and a deep belief in the transformative power of public education. As a lawyer, youth coach, and parent of three young Huskies, Kaleigh brings a thoughtful and forward-looking perspective to governance during a pivotal time for Hemlock.
Why Kaleigh Chose to Serve
Active participation in the school community runs in Kaleigh’s blood. Early on, her family introduced her to volunteerism through Saginaw Area Catholic Schools, where she saw firsthand how volunteers enrich school communities by supporting students, staff, and programs in meaningful ways. With her own family now deeply connected to Hemlock, Kaleigh felt compelled to step up and contribute fresh ideas and the perspective of a young Huskie family. Her goal in serving on the Board is simple but powerful: not just maintaining momentum, but pulling the sled forward—shaping a stronger future for students, families, and the broader community.
A Proud Huskie Moment
One moment this past year made Kaleigh especially proud to be a Huskie: Hemlock Public School District’s identification for $1,015,000 to expand early childhood and childcare infrastructure. This significant investment reinforces foundational learning for the district’s youngest learners and reflects a deep commitment to the future. Kaleigh sees this as foundational work—strengthening early learning today to ensure sustained academic and community growth tomorrow.
What Sets Hemlock Apart
In Kaleigh’s view, Hemlock’s strength lies in its small but mighty community. The district listens actively to voices from long-standing Huskie families and those new to the area alike. This open, inclusive approach ensures that Hemlock honors tradition while embracing innovation. Kaleigh believes this blend of rooted tradition and forward thinking creates a learning environment where students, families, and staff all feel supported and valued.
Looking Ahead: Exciting Growth and Partnership
Hemlock schools have experienced explosive growth in recent years, and Kaleigh is especially excited about harnessing that growth through strategic partnerships. Whether educational, athletic, or artistic, collaborative efforts will be key to maximizing the potential of Hemlock’s programs and facilities. She believes that by working with community partners, the district can translate expansion into lasting impact for all Huskies.
Lessons from Board Service
Since joining the Board, Kaleigh has gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of public education governance—especially how financial operations and strategic decisions shape what’s possible. She notes that school district growth is financed through diverse funding streams, each with its own requirements and strategic considerations. This understanding has deepened her respect for the thoughtful planning and collaboration required to advance the district’s goals.
Resonating with Collaboration
When asked which Hemlock Public School District core value—innovate, collaborate, educate—resonates most with her right now, Kaleigh chose collaborate. She believes that meaningful progress comes from bringing together diverse perspectives. Collaboration ensures that decisions reflect the needs of students and staff and that the community’s collective voice guides innovation and growth.
