David Messing’s path to the Board of Education is rooted in service, teamwork, and a deep respect for the role schools play in shaping communities. Long before joining the board, David was a familiar face on sidelines and in gyms—active as a youth coach and later serving with Sports Boosters and the Pep Club. Those experiences didn’t just keep him close to school activities; they sparked a lasting commitment to community volunteerism and to supporting the development of local youth.
That sense of connection extends to family. David and his wife, Sue—a science teacher with the Montrose Public School District—are proud parents of three Hemlock Huskies. Alexis, Class of 2018, is a licensed insurance agent with Mayan Agency in Merrill, Michigan. Marissa, Class of 2021, is pursuing an engineering degree at Michigan Technological University. Gabe is currently part of the Class of 2026, carrying on the family’s Huskie tradition.
David’s appreciation for Hemlock runs deep. Drawn to the district’s agricultural roots, he sees reflections of his own upbringing in the community’s values. He graduated from Carsonville–Port Sanilac Schools in 1988 and earned a degree in Marketing from Central Michigan University in 1993—an education that helped shape the strong business acumen he brings to board service today.
As a member of the Board of Education, David thrives on the energy and impact of the role. He approaches governance with a people-first mindset, pairing practical business sense with a genuine dedication to promoting the school system and the broader community. He believes these qualities are essential as districts navigate one of education’s most persistent challenges: balancing limited resources against growing needs—particularly when human resources must be weighed alongside facility and material demands.
Despite those challenges, David remains firmly committed to the district’s mission and vision. He emphasizes providing the highest-quality education and experience possible for students and families. Among his proudest points of pride are the big things happening in a small school—clean, well-cared-for facilities; a strong, unmistakable identity; and a clear focus on the future.
