Hemlock Public School District (HPSD) announced that its 2024–25 independent financial audit has been completed with an external CPA firm in accordance with state and professional standards—another year of verified fiscal stewardship that underpins student-focused investments across academics, arts, athletics, and career pathways. “Open books build open doors for students,” said Board President Matt Wesener. “Independent audits and clear communication prove to our community that every dollar is accounted for—and more importantly, that those dollars are working where they should: classrooms, programs, and safe, reliable operations.”

Why This Matters For Families

A clean, independent audit is more than a compliance checkbox—it’s the foundation for safer operations, clear communication, and smarter spending. In the past year, that stewardship has helped Hemlock move forward on upgrades, facility enhancements tied to student use (Legend Gymnasium circulation, weight room/wrestling spaces, and walking-track progress), and program expansion through the Lockwood STEM Center.

National Recognition For How We Communicate

This summer, HPSD earned the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Golden Achievement Award for excellence in our millage communication—recognition that our planning, two-way engagement, and results meet a national standard. When taxpayers and families understand the “why” behind investments, trust grows and projects accelerate. (hemlockps.com)

Student Outcomes You Can See

Financial discipline is translating into student opportunities. Recent graduating classes have reported more than $1 million in scholarships, strengthening postsecondary and workforce pathways for Huskies headed to college, the trades, military, and more. At the same time, the Lockwood STEM Center expansion and year-round programming continue to connect students with coding, CAD, machining/fabrication, and industry mentors—hands-on learning that complements our arts and athletics. “Stewardship is our strategy, not just a slogan,” said Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck. “Because our finances are strong and our communication is transparent, we can keep investing in what families value—transportation reliability, modern learning spaces, and pathways that help every student take the next step with confidence.” (hemlockps.com)
