At Hemlock Public School District, we believe that student well-being is the foundation for academic success and lifelong achievement. Recently, a community member suggested that funds from school construction should be redirected toward mental health support. While bond dollars used for construction are legally restricted and cannot be allocated to operational costs such as staffing, we want to reaffirm our unwavering commitment: mental health and preparing our students for life beyond graduation remain top priorities.

Over the past several years, the Hemlock Public School District has more than quadrupled the number of licensed, credentialed professionals who support our students and staff on a daily basis. Our comprehensive support system now includes:

  • Elementary through High School Services: Each building is staffed with a licensed counselor, whom we have titled as a "Dean" (Ling, MS, HS), or a social worker dedicated to student needs (Elem).

  • District-Wide Services: A special education social worker, a registered nurse, a licensed mental health practitioner, and a school resource officer.

  • 24/7 Support: A partnership with Gaggle provides a round-the-clock helpline specific to Hemlock students and families.

  • Professional Focus: Administrators recently completed a district-wide study of The Anxious Generation to better understand the impact of technology on mental health, with proactive policies now being developed and implemented.

We also recognize that engagement plays a critical role in student well-being. Beyond athletics, Hemlock has invested in expanding opportunities in robotics, the arts, and music, ensuring every student finds a place to belong and thrive.

At the same time, investing in our facilities is an investment in our community. Clean, modern, and welcoming schools promote well-being and performance while serving as anchors for economic and social revitalization. The return of local businesses and the success of community programs like senior bingo, the annual Thanksgiving Dinner, and spring brunch all highlight the powerful connection between strong schools and a strong community.

We believe in the whole child—and the whole community. Students and staff who learn and work in supportive environments are healthier, happier, and more successful.

We welcome open dialogue and encourage our community to see these efforts firsthand. To schedule a tour of our facilities and meet the people behind these supports, please contact our office at (989) 642-5282, open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.

Together, we stand stronger.
