Whole Child

Hemlock Public School District is proud to announce its selection for the prestigious 2023 Whole Child Award - Gold Level by Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). This esteemed recognition highlights the district's commitment to the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) framework, showcasing its dedication to the holistic development of every student.

The award, sponsored by Michigan ASCD in collaboration with the Michigan School Health Coordinators’ Association (MISHCA) and Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principal Association (MEMSPA), seeks to identify schools in Michigan that embody the ten components of the WSCC model. The Whole Child approach, endorsed by ASCD worldwide, prioritizes the long-term development and success of students, transcending the traditional focus on academic achievement. The framework comprises five tenets: Healthy, Safe, Engaged, Supported, and Challenged, ensuring students enter adulthood equipped for career pursuits, critical thinking, and global citizenship.

Superintendent Don Killingbeck expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, "This award is a testament to the dedication of our educators, staff, and the entire Hemlock community. We are committed to providing an environment that nurtures the whole child, and this honor validates our collective efforts."

The selection committee was impressed by Hemlock Public School District's proactive embrace of the WSCC framework, evident in the innovative and collaborative practices that ensure the success of the Whole Child across the district.

The award will be officially presented at the 2023 MEMSPA Annual Conference on December 6, 2023, at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan. This recognition underscores Hemlock Public School District's position as a leader in fostering a school culture that prioritizes the health, safety, engagement, support, and challenge of every student.

Matt Wesener, President of the Hemlock Public School District Board, also shared his thoughts on the achievement, saying, "We are incredibly proud of our district's commitment to the Whole Child framework. It reflects our belief that education goes beyond academics and encompasses the overall well-being and development of our students."
