Ron Kunold

In our journey through the chapters of our school district's history, there are individuals whose influence transcends time. Today, as we continue our Standing on the Shoulders of Giants series, we pay tribute to a true luminary - Ron Kunold.

For 28 years, Ron Kunold dedicated his heart and soul to Hemlock as both an educator and a coach. His legacy is not just one of teaching but of nurturing growth and igniting a love for learning.

As a coach, Ron's impact was nothing short of extraordinary. Over two decades, he didn't just shape athletes; he instilled in them the values of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect. His teams didn't just shine on the court; they radiated sportsmanship, earning the respect and admiration of athletes and coaches from far and wide. Ron's commitment to fostering an environment of mutual respect and friendly competition left an enduring impression on the entire tennis community.

Under his guidance, these teams achieved remarkable state rankings, earning 5th-place in 1993 and 1997, a 6th-place finish in 1992, and top-10 rankings in 1991 and 1999. His unwavering commitment to excellence was evident in the countless hours he spent maintaining the tennis courts, ensuring a pristine playing environment for his athletes.

But Ron Kunold's impact reached beyond the realms of the classroom and tennis court. He was a lifelong educator, molding the lives of students and athletes alike. His recognition as the MHSTCA (Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association) Coach of the Year in 1991 speaks volumes about his ability to inspire and lead.

Numbers only begin to scratch the surface of his legacy: 21 years as boys coach, 3 as girls. Total record: 208-40-5. But the heart of his influence lies far beyond these statistics.

Over the years, he coached little league, youth football, and basketball, in addition to high school golf. His passion extended to coaching high school tennis until his retirement, instilling values and encouraging his students and athletes to chase their dreams and learn life's valuable lessons.

His love for tennis was matched only by his love for his student athletes. He dedicated countless hours to nurturing their skills, working with anyone who sought to learn, be it a student on his roster or a local town kid hitting on the board.

Ron Kunold was a treasure not only to the game of tennis but to the Hemlock community. He was recognized as the Outstanding Elementary School Teacher, Regional Coach of the Year in Boys and Girls Tennis, and State Tennis Coach of the Year. Later, he was honored with a place in the Tennis Coach's Hall of Fame.

His legacy continues to resonate through the lives he touched, and his unselfish dedication to the sport, his patience, talent, and time remain imprinted on the hearts of those he inspired.

Today, we express our deepest thanks and gratitude to Ron Kunold for the indelible impact he made on our community. We stand on the foundation he built, continuing to uphold his values and teachings, ensuring that his legacy thrives in the generations to come.
