State grant covers 75% of purchase cost, helping district invest in safe, reliable transportation while protecting local resources.
Hemlock Public School District is adding a new 77-passenger diesel school bus to its transportation fleet, thanks to grant funding from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). The grant covers 75% of the purchase price, allowing the district to make an important investment in student transportation at a fraction of the total cost.
With a purchase price of just over $150,000, the district's local contribution is approximately $37,500, with the remaining cost covered through state grant funding.
For Hemlock Public School District, the investment represents more than adding another bus. It reflects an ongoing commitment to providing safe, dependable transportation for students while making thoughtful financial decisions on behalf of the community.
"Every day, families trust us to get their children to school and back home safely," said Denise Dowdell, Director Business Operations and Human Resources. "Our buses are an important part of the school day, and keeping our fleet reliable is something we take seriously. Having a new bus helps us continue providing the dependable service our students and families deserve."
The addition also highlights the district's continued efforts to pursue outside funding opportunities that support essential services without placing the full financial burden on local taxpayers.
"One of the things we work hard at in Hemlock is finding ways to stretch every dollar while continuing to improve what we provide for students," said Superintendent Dr. Don Killingbeck. "When we can leverage grant funding to cover 75% of a major purchase, that's a win for our students, our transportation department, and the taxpayers who support our schools. It's about being responsible with the resources entrusted to us."
Dowdell emphasized that while a new bus is a welcome addition, the people behind the wheel and those maintaining the fleet remain central to the district's transportation program.
"We have a great team of drivers and support staff who care about our kids," Dowdell added. "They are often the first school employees our students see in the morning and the last they see in the afternoon. Giving our team dependable equipment helps them do what they do best: take care of our students."
Hemlock Public School District appreciates the support of EGLE and the availability of grant programs that help Michigan school districts maintain and improve essential services.
At Hemlock, investing in students also means investing in the people, equipment, and services that help make every school day possible.
