Meet Diane Mulvaney, a devoted volunteer, mentor, and lifelong champion for Hemlock students whose impact on our community spans more than four decades.
While Diane was born and raised in Saginaw, Hemlock has been home for most of her adult life and the place where she and her husband, John, built their family and invested their hearts.
Their story began in 1969 while both were working at Burger King. After John returned home from military service in Vietnam, they married in 1971 and eventually settled in Hemlock, where they raised their three children: John Brian, Matthew, and Elizabeth. Following in their father's footsteps, all three graduated from Hemlock High School. John himself was a member of the Class of 1968.
For Diane, becoming part of the Hemlock community started the same way it does for many parents: showing up.
She spent countless hours taking her young children to story hour at Rauchholz Memorial Library, Summer Recreation programs, picnics, movies, sporting events, and school activities. Before long, volunteering became a way of life.
What began as serving as a room mother eventually led to a 22-year career as a paraprofessional at Hemlock Middle and High School, where she worked until her retirement in 2012. Yet retirement never really stuck.
Today, Diane continues serving as advisor for Students Leading Students (SLS), a role she has held since 1989. For generations of Huskies, she has been a familiar face, helping students grow as leaders while creating opportunities they might never have imagined.
Through SLS, Diane has helped organize educational trips to destinations including New York City, Chicago, and Hawaii. She has also dedicated decades of service to Sports Boosters, yearbooks, school plays, PTO activities, and countless events that support students and families.
“Being a positive influence, especially for children, is important to me,” Diane says.
That commitment extends far beyond the school walls.
Over the years, Diane has helped lead community service projects, veterans initiatives, Toys for Tots drives, the Huskie Express, and military recognition efforts. She has worked to preserve and share the stories of veterans through displays and educational opportunities while helping students understand the value of service, gratitude, and citizenship.
Her passion for serving others is rooted in lessons learned growing up.
Diane describes herself as a “free grazer” as a child — spending her days riding bicycles through the neighborhood, climbing trees, playing baseball with cousins, and enjoying the freedom of a close-knit community. She was active in school, cheered at St. Joseph High School, studied tap dance and Mexican ballet for 13 years, and developed the strong work ethic her parents modeled every day.
“My mom and dad instilled in me an excellent work ethic,” she says. “Family and faith were always cornerstones of our life.”
Today, those values remain at the center of everything she does.
Whether she's supporting events at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Saginaw, serving as Regional Ride Captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, participating in military and veterans honors, or spending time with family and friends, Diane approaches life with energy and purpose.
She also has a love for adventure. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Diane has owned three motorcycles and still holds her motorcycle endorsement. Some of her favorite memories include traveling across the country with John, exploring Italy, enjoying family bonfires, and discovering new places together.
Ask Diane her favorite place, and the answer isn't a destination at all.
“Anywhere with family and friends, sharing stories and memories.”
When asked to describe Hemlock in a single word, her answer comes quickly:
“Blessed.”
After decades of service to Hemlock Schools and the broader community, Diane’s legacy can be found in the countless students she has encouraged, the families she has supported, and the traditions she has helped sustain.
Through it all, she continues to live by the values that have guided her life from the beginning: faith, family, friendship, and service.
And for Hemlock, we are grateful she chose to share those gifts with us.
