Pie

The Culinary Arts students have been busy learning several baking and cooking techniques this year. Recently, each student had the opportunity to create an entire apple pie to share with their family and friends. “It’s the one time of year I have all my students prepare the same food,” said Culinary Instructor, Mrs. LeAnn Gerard. “Normally, we have five recipes going but we’re Michiganders, so I believe all my kids MUST learn how to make a real apple pie - one with lard in the crust and cinnamon and nutmeg in the filling.”

As students returned to class after taking their pies home, comments filled the room. “My mom said I am making apple pie for Thanksgiving,” stated Alison Grove. “Grandpa said it was one of the best apple pies he has ever had,” chimed in junior Katie Lamont. Senior Damon Savage commented, “My mom loved the presentation.” And Julia Mundo added,”My mom thought it was so good, she bought the stuff for me to make another one!”

“I’m thrilled with how all the pies turned out in my two classes,” responded Mrs. Gerard. “And we want to thank LEAMAN’S of Freeland, and Mr. Don Krieger of Hemlock for donating apples to our project. We also want to thank Mr. Peter Shaheen and Ms. Karin Towns from HORIZONS CONFERENCE CENTER for supplying our students with new chef jackets this year. We truly needed them. Thank you community members, for being so supportive!”
