Hemlock, MI –  The Hemlock Public School District engaged a group of senior citizens for our first of a series of lunch and learns dedicated to connecting our school and community. The session was focused on the Lockwood STEM Center and had seniors flying drones and operating robots before the day was over. According to Newton’s laws, an object in motion will stay in motion and so it is with people as well that never stop having a passion for learning.

Director of Friend Raising and Special Projects, Tom Lockwood said, “It is always a pleasure to showcase the STEM Center and work with great people.”

The Lockwood STEM Center was functional most last school year and hosted a grand opening event that was well attended in June of 2021. The center is a dedicated space to support student learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The space is home to the Hemlock High School robotics team, Gray Matter #5712, and has hosted several events already.

Board President Matt Wesener said “We believe that the school system should be firmly connected with the community.  Events like this are a great opportunity to share experiences and grow that connection.”

The district has a series of lunch and learns along with the annual Thanksgiving Dinner in effort to reach out to our community and help support those that have missed out the most on human interaction and engagement over the last two years.

Superintendent, Dr. Don Killingbeck said, “Lunch and learns are a great opportunity for us to teach a different kind of senior than we normally do, but it is also an opportunity for us to learn from their wisdom that only comes with experience.”

The next senior citizen lunch and learn event is scheduled for January and will feature the Judy Turner Black Box Theatre at Hemlock Middle School.
