collab

Collaboration is defined as the act of working together to finish a project or create something.

You can understand why this plays such a huge role in the Classroom of the Future.

Collaboration has nothing to do with just “getting along with others.” It involves group project planning and ultimately creating a tangible product, something that can be seen and evaluated. It’s a fact. Many job providers require people who can work effectively in teams to create ideas, products, and designs.

And what better place for middle schoolers to learn these skills – than in our school where we incorporate social skills and situational awareness as two of the skills we help our students develop?

We help our students build their collaboration skills in classroom projects, working with teams to create robots, control Spheros, and solving math problems together.

Our students form teams to improve their personal “best” by reviewing tests, using challenge software in social studies, and completing science lab lessons.

Band members collaborate to produce excellent performances. Athletes collaborate on plays and formations. Students in Spanish and English classes create books to share with other students, often in other buildings. You’ll even see students using whiteboard tables to collaborate and “show their work” in how they arrived at their solutions in math.

“Teamwork is such an important skill for our students, now and in “real life,” said HMS principal Terry Keyser. “We need to teach and practice collaboration across grade levels, subject areas, and in a variety of situations so our students have many positive experiences with it. The 21st Century skills of collaboration is critical to the current and future success of our students.”
